I recently realized that I didn’t have a companion list to my article 5 Weird Women of Old Hollywood, and I honestly felt a little ashamed. If any gender was capable of weirdness back then, it was the men. Their weird behavior ranged from obsessive cleanliness (Clark Gable) to a need for manipulative control (Alec Guinness) and everything in between.
Horror lovers can’t get enough of Jason Voorhees: He’s big, he’s mysterious, and his hulking frame moves soundlessly through all ten of the original films, the crossover, and the 2009 remake.
One of the more grisly, imaginative, and consistent franchises was the Nightmare on Elm Street films, which were released between 1984 and 1994. Originally helmed by Wes Craven the series saw child molester and murderer Freddy Krueger entering the dreams of teenagers and killing them to perpetuate vengeance against their parents for burning him alive.
Mental illness has become a hot topic of recent conversation in part because of ongoing debates over universal health care and gun control. A major call to action from the left has been to treat mental illness, and to point out that many people with mental illnesses are not violent. Someone should really tell that to Hollywood
Everybody wants to be better read, have seen the right films, and binged the right kind of television shows. We as humans have to consume art, as a function of being human beings. In that spirit, we want to consume the best art possible
The obvious choice was to go much gorier. The Universal monster movies of the thirties and forties were much more interested in a quick fright and ghoulish apparitions than blood and gore, so the remakes had to step it up immeasurably.
Horror has always played a huge role in my movie watching experiences. Each of these entries came to me at a different time in my life. I remember watching “Halloween” on the last Halloween I went trick or treating, ending my childhood and ushering in my adult sensibilities.
Bad movies are their own genre. A film can be bad because the principle talent is amateurish, or because it tries to please everyone and so pleases no one. It can be racist, sexist, or just plain lazy with its humor.
While I don’t generally make it to the theater that often I try my darndest, and this year was no exception. A lot of great films came out in 2015, and there’s a lot I still have to see (Oscar bait especially). In no particular order here are ten of my favorite films released this year.
I plowed through all five installments and then tried to go to sleep, which proved to be very difficult, which I realized was the intent of the special. I hadn’t heard of many of these films which fueled my penchant for being a know it all.
Why wait until October to get into the Halloween spirit? There are tons of shows on Netflix and other platforms that you can watch all year long to get seriously spooked. Some of the best television shows have been creepy, scary, or downright disturbing. Here is a list of shows to get you in the Halloween spirit, or maybe just to binge watch at your leisure.
hat said, I do not like being scared. I will not watch anything to do with torture porn, like “Hostel” or a version of “Saw” that isn’t edited for TV. Gore is good, but not when it’s realistic, and torture is good, but not when I get to see the results.
